Multi-Cultural Education and Teacher Training

The Kerem staff facilitated two workshops.

The Teaching and Learning Center focuses on the professional development of teachers within the Kerem Institute by forming professional communities of learning. These aim to examine and improve the teachers’ work. In the context of the conference, the center runs three programs of interest: The Multi-Cultural Teacher’s Lounge, which includes the Dove’s Wings program for the integration of Ethiopian-born teachers, while Teachers Leading the Way operates in two facets: First, Jewish Hebrew teachers who work in east Jerusalem schools. Second, a joint training program for Jewish and Arab teachers, who will eventually become pedagogical advisors and facilitators for various city-based groups.

Teachers Leading the Way: Joint Jewish-Arab professional development and training. (Hebrew-Arabic, simultaneous translation).mixed-cities-285

Facilitated by Yael Pulvermacher‏ and Hila Berger, program facilitators.

This joint training program is based on simultaneous translation, enabling everyone to speak in their language of choice. The facilitation is also shared, and all materials are bi-lingual. The workshop included a short movie from the training conducted during the 2017 school year.

Multicultural Teachers’ Lounge: Personal and professional identities. (Hebrew)

Facilitated by Yoav Paz and Yael Pulvermacher, program facilitators.

This workshop examined the connection between personal and professional identities: how can a teacher examine their educational work through the lens of their personal and professional identities? How do the different components of these identities influence each other? The workshop presented the basic principles, and participants grappled with deliberations and dilemmas faced by an Ethiopian-born teacher who works in east Jerusalem.
